Linköping (with 166,700 residents, is Sweden’s fifth largest city ) is the winner of The European Capital of Innovation Awards 2023, in the category European Rising Innovative City. One of the foundations on which Linköping University’s success is built is collaboration with the society around us. It connects our education to the labour market, strengthens the relevance of our research, and makes it possible for the knowledge gained to benefit society and nurture positive social development.
The Division of Environmental Change is organized around overarching environmental challenges: climate change, pollution, disruptive resource and energy use and supply, and knowledge for sustainable development. The division hosts the Centre for Climate Science and Policy Research (CSPR), an interdisciplinary research environment with a strong track record in climate communication and stakeholder interaction, as well as sustainability transformations and climate policy. Through developing and applying participatory research methodologies and innovative information visualization techniques, CSPR is renowned as a testing ground for innovative transdisciplinary research, combining development of communication tools with critical communication analysis. The CSPR faculty is involved as lead authors and/or reviewers for IPCC texts and other international assessments. The Division of Technology and Social Change represents one of the largest science, technology and innovation studies departments in the Nordic countries and features in one of its four research groups on socio-technical transitions in energy and transport systems, and in the built environment. A particular focus is placed on energy and innovation policies and on the role of end-users and civil society in energy transition.
Another key stakeholder to this project is Linköping Science Park, an innovation hotspot and independent arena for Triple Helix meetings. Linköping Science Park facilitates workshops and events to stimulate innovation and support the exchange of knowledge. With its extensive network, Linköping Science Park is leading competence clusters within digitalization, sustainable and smart cities, and societal change. The Park is engaged in the strategic innovation program Viable Cities in close collaboration withLiU researchers are closely involved in the Swedish strategic innovation program "Viable Cities". The program focuses on the transition to climate neutral cities, projects on the adaptation of urban and regional planning education to the requirements of sustainable transformative change, as well as projects focusing on regional innovation policies and urban low-carbon transitions.
LiU is furthermore collaborating with Testbed Ebbepark which is a recently constructed new central city district in Linköping, designed as a unique environment for smart living and sustainable growth. Ebbepark provides a testbed for a variety of research projects, including the Climate Neutral Linköping 2030 project.
