Date: February 20, 11-14h
Location: CircuLab @ UAB Bellaterra Campus (UAB OPEN LABS)
On Thursday, February 20, the first ULALABS Local Workshop was hosted at CircuLab on the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Bellaterra Campus. Over 20 participants from academia, research institutes, municipal public administration (including Ajuntament de Sant Feliu de Llobregart, Ajuntament Palau-solità i Plegamans, Consell Comarcal del Vallès Occidental), and innovation labs (including members of Xarxa de Labs de Vallès, HUB B30,UAB Open Labs, Parc de Recerca UAB among others) gathered to share insights and ideas.
Workshop Objectives The workshop had several key objectives:
To map the local ecosystem of innovation laboratories and other urban experimentation spaces that address urban sustainability challenges.
To guide the next steps in creating our learning community, identifying common challenges and learning tools for the next phase of the project.
To map the challenges we are working on and the learning/capacity needs we identify.
To present and share the co-created vision of the Lab of Labs, a distributed European-wide living laboratory, a key element of our project.
To provide information about opportunities to get involved and collaborate with the project in the coming months.

ULALABS session at Circulab, UAB OPEN LABS
The workshop began with a welcome and presentation round, followed by an introduction to the ULALABS context and the co-created vision of the Lab of Labs. Paloma Valdivia Vizarreta shared experiences from innovation laboratories and experimentation spaces in Stavanger, Norway, offering valuable insights into successful practices. Participants enjoyed also a guided visit to the CircuLab.
The interactive sessions focused on mapping the local ecosystem of innovation laboratories and urban experimentation spaces addressing sustainability challenges. Discussions highlighted key areas such as water cycle adaptation, composting and recycling, circular economy, food sustainability, energy models, urban mobility, transformative education, well-being and mental health, and climate adaptation.
Future Vision and Transformative Impacts
One of the dynamic sessions explored transformative impacts valued by participants, emphasizing cross-sector collaboration, citizen engagement, environmental sustainability, technology and accessibility, valuing local heritage, and innovation scaling. Ideas included enhancing recycling and waste management, engaging citizens in decision-making, and leveraging local cultural assets.
Learning Needs and Resources
Participants identified several key learning needs and resources essential for supporting their projects. These included methodologies such as design thinking and the startup lean method, participatory budgeting, ecodesign, and digital tools to support collaborative projects.
What We Can Learn from Each Other
Participants mapped out various areas where they can learn from each other, emphasizing the value of shared knowledge and collaborative learning.
Key expertise included design thinking, participatory budgeting, Spatial Information Systems, Ecodesign, urban co-design, sustainable mobility, and social innovation, among the others.
These identified areas highlight the diverse expertise within the ULALABS community and the potential for mutual learning and growth through collaboration. It was a successful step towards building our Learning Community!
